Hot water is going green with Santam

Green is the new black in insurance. To show Santam’s support of the environment, it is the first insurance company to actively promote green energy by opting to give domestic householder clients the choice of replacing a damaged geyser with environmentally friendly solar heated options during the claim process. Santam is committed to facilitating the process as there are certain modifications that need to take place when converting from electrical to solar.

The benefit that the average household could experience by installing a solar geyser is in excess of 30% per month on their total geyser’s electricity bill.

The launch of this initiative forms part of Santam’s proactive risk management solution strategy and will have the following key impacts and benefits:

  • An offering to clients in terms of water heaters (geysers) that is more energy efficient;
  • Longer lasting water heaters, if and when installed correctly;
  • A reduction in energy cost for the consumer when converting to or replacing with solar water heaters;
  • Overall efficient usage of energy.

Hennie Nortje, Executive Head: Claims Services at Santam advises: “The efficient use of electricity has become a national priority, a necessity for the future development of the South African economy and effective provision of electricity. The Department of Public Enterprises has set itself a target of 2 million solar geysers to be installed by 2013. Santam’s solar initiative is our way of supporting government’s drive on alternative energy.”
