Mutual & Federal Agri Interschools Rugby – a narrow margin between long time rivals

For the first time in twenty years, Oakdale Agricultural High beat rival Boland Landbou - on Boland home ground. On a cold and windy day, Oakdale’s first team narrowly beat Boland through a single penalty kick at the Interschools Rugby played on 21 August, sponsored by Mutual & Federal Agri. A tight score of 3-0 showed just how closely matched these teams were.

Andries Wiese, Group Manager, Mutual & Federal Agri, explains that the interschools rugby day is alternated each year between Oakdale and Boland. “It includes all teams from the Under 14 Ds up to the First teams battling it out against each other”, he says.

Wiese highlights the significance of the 2010 game. “This year’s matches were particularly key, as the 2009 Interschools was cancelled due to an outbreak of swine flu at Oakdale. So these games would have been first time events for the Under 14s - and for the Under 15s who could not play the previous year.”

Mutual & Federal Agri has been a longstanding sponsor of general sports development at both Oakdale and Boland, as well as the lead up to, and including, the Interschools rugby day. Pre-match events kicked in a few days before, with a wine auction which raised R88 000 for school funds, braais and team building, an interschool golf challenge at Wellington Golf Club (won by Oakdale), and a formal evening function.

Both Oakdale and Boland are agricultural boarding schools, located on farms, offering full agricultural education in addition to the complete academic syllabus. Oakdale is in Riversdale, southern Western Cape, near George, and is attended by around 390 boys, and Boland is based near Paarl and Wellington, and has 420 learners. Students are trained and educated in many aspects of agriculture such as sheep and cattle farming, planting and ploughing.

Wiese notes that besides excelling at sports and specialising in agricultural studies, these two schools have 100% matric pass rates.

Mutual & Federal Agri is a division of leading short term insurer, Mutual & Federal.
