The Institute of Risk Management of South Africa (IRMSA) announced the winners of the 2011 Risk Management Awards at a glittering Gala Dinner event, sponsored by Lion of Africa Insurance Company, which was held at the Monte Casino in Fourways, Johannesburg, on Friday evening 28 October 2011.

Aptly themed as “Legends”, the Awards Ceremony was attended by hundreds of Risk Managers, Corporate Intermediaries, members of the media and other guests who had gathered to celebrate the recognition of South Africa’s top Risk Managers.

The IRMSA Risk Management Awards recognise and reward South Africa’s top Risk Management Professionals. The Awards Programme has been established specifically to acknowledge, encourage and celebrate excellence within the Risk Management Sector.

As Risk Management is an integral part of any industry’s management processes, it is crucial for South Africa to recognise best practices across all industries, to ensure we learn, share and become a leading force in Risk Management.

The Awards recognise individuals for their phenomenal contribution, as well as the best Risk Management initiatives within different industry sectors and our congratulations go to this year’s winners and runners-up:

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

2011 Risk Manager of the Year

Winner

Philip Wessels

Through Philip’s leadership, Nedbank has become well recognised and highly regarded for its effective risk management processes and governance principles. His aspiration to ensure ‘no surprises’ is a vision that his staff of some 450 buy into and are committed to. Risk management has been embedded seamlessly into business processes.  Philip has led risk management within Nedbank for close on 7 years and achieved the status of the first SA Bank that has received South African Reserve Bank approval for Trading market risk IMA, diversified AMA for Operational risk and AIRB for credit risk.

Runner Up

Antonella da Cunha

2011 Rookie / Up and Coming Risk Manager of the Year Award

Kabelo Letebele

Kabelo has brought into the risk role, a lot of passion, energy and structure to make Risk Management visible within the group. Noting that he has only been in this field for less than two years, he has actively sought to improve himself whilst succeeding in executing his mandate. He has entrenched the risk management culture, continuously engaged the organization with the aim of raising the profile of risk management within the group and ensured that the risk management process remains effective and value adding to the business.
